The Royal Academy of Sciences recently hosted the conference Social Norms in Development, where PhD students and faculty from the SSE Department of Economics presented their ongoing research in the poster session.

PhD student Avenia Ghazarian, currently on the academic job market, presented her job market paper on how Iran's 2022 "Women, Life, Freedom" movement shifted social norms and women's roles in society. PhD student Fadhil Nadhif Muharam discussed his research on the effects of raising the age of sexual consent on adolescent behavior and social norms in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eva Forslund, also a PhD student at the Department of Economics, presented her work on how the adoption of milking machines in mid-20th century Finland advanced women’s political representation.

In addition, Assistant Professor Sampreet Goraya shared his research on how ethnic divisions shape firms' growth and consumer markets in India.
