How Can Systembolaget Ensure Sustainability Throughout Its Value Chain?

Retail Management students in Systembolaget Retail Club were invited to a workshop focused on exploring sustainability challenges across beverage value chains using ESG criteria.

Martin Horwitz, Sustainability Specialist at Systembolaget, shared valuable insights into the complexities of securing environmental and social sustainability across all stages of the value chain. He explained that because Systembolaget sources products through suppliers rather than directly from producers, extra diligence and collaboration are required to address issues further upstream. Despite these challenges, Systembolaget continues to lead as number one in Sweden's Sustainable Brand Index.

Following the presentation, students engaged in a case based on the information shared. Divided into four groups, each was assigned a different beverage with distinct characteristics and value chain profiles. Their task was to conduct a risk analysis tied to environmental impact, human rights, and public health, and to propose actionable measures to prevent and mitigate these risks.

Key findings from the workshop revealed that sustainability certifications can sometimes be misleading, as they often focus on only one aspect of sustainability. Additionally, it was noted that alcohol-free products may still carry significant human-rights concerns, and that the environmental benefits of larger production volumes can be offset by increased consumption risks.

A sincere thank you to Martin for shedding light on this critical topic and facilitating such an
engaging workshop, and to Emelie Neidell for organizing yet another insightful learning experience!
