Stockholm School of Economics removes the Swedish SAT (högskoleprov) requirement

The requirement to take the Swedish SAT (högskoleprovet, HP) has had negative effects on diversity among students at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). We are therefore launching a comprehensive review of our entire admissions model for the bachelor level. While this review is underway, we are removing the HP requirement starting with the next admissions round for the fall semester of 2026.

In this year’s admissions round, SSE piloted an HP requirement for our bachelor programs in the national admissions process as a response to grade inflation in upper-secondary schools. This led to other unintended effects, including a decrease in diversity that was more significant than we had anticipated. Against this background, we are taking a step back and initiating a comprehensive review of our admissions model.

Pending the outcome of this review, we are removing the HP requirement effective immediately, meaning it will not be a requirement for Swedish students applying for the fall 2026 admissions round. This means that, for the national grades quota, our admissions principles will align more closely with those of other Swedish universities and colleges.

Once the revised model is finalized, we will communicate any changes well in advance, with clear information. SSE aims to ensure a fair, transparent and predictable admissions process that captures both actual knowledge and potential.

“As an international business school, we will draw inspiration from leading institutions around the world. Our ambition remains the same, to attract and welcome the most talented students, enabling us to fulfill our mission of strengthening Sweden’s competitiveness,” says Lars Strannegård, President of the Stockholm School of Economics.

The HP requirement also served as a signal regarding the issue of grade inflation, and we can now see that the matter has gained national attention, and the government has initiated work on a new grading system.
