Students with family income in the bottom of the income distribution are far less likely to enroll in college compared to those at the top. There is also a large and growing gap in where low-income and higher-income students enroll, fueling concerns that postsecondary education in the US is a reinforcer of class rigidities rather than an engine of economic opportunity. We examine the impact of increasing college quality on college persistence and completion by analyzing the results of an intervention designed to increase the number of low-income students attending a highly selective university. We study the response of four thousand students to the randomized offer of an early guarantee of four years of free tuition and fees.
