Approaching Complex Strategic Challenges at Systembolaget
Filip Manfredsson, Corporate Strategist, introduced the role of strategy within organizations and how strategists navigate ambiguity to align decisions with the broader responsibilities of Systembolaget.
Prior to the session, students were assigned a case to prepare. During the workshop, all digital tools were set aside to encourage focused discussion and collaboration. Together, the group began by identifying key dilemmas and strategic issues within the case. The students then worked in smaller teams, each focusing on one selected dilemma. Within these groups, the task was to clarify the core problem, structure the situation, and develop concrete action points. The process emphasized discussion, reflection, and continuous feedback between groups. Throughout the session, it became clear that while students are often trained to solve predefined cases, the real challenge lies in defining the problem itself.
The workshop highlighted several key steps in strategic work: understanding the context, identifying critical uncertainties, defining the core problem, and translating insights into actionable directions. Equally important is the ability to ask the right questions, questions that challenge assumptions, uncover underlying drivers, and open up new perspectives rather than simply seeking quick answers.
