Strategy, Innovation and Retail in Practice at ICA

The first-year students in the Retail Management Program visited ICA's headquarters in Solna to gain insights into the company's strategy, innovation processes, and the everyday realities of being an ICA retailer.

The study visit began with Jan Prokopec, Chief Strategy Officer at ICA Sverige and SSE alumni, who introduced the students to ICA's unique business model. He explained how ICA's structure combines entrepreneurial freedom for individual retailers with the advantages of a large, coordinated group.

Next, Emma Lindahl, Head of ICAx, gave an inspiring and forward-looking presentation about ICA's innovation hub. She outlined how the organization works to challenge established structures and highlighted that “the best way to predict the future is to invent it”. Emma also emphasized that “learning faster than your competitors” is key to maintaining long-term competitiveness in a fast-changing world.

The visit concluded with Erik Geijer, ICA retailer at ICA Kvantum Kvissleby and SSE alumni, who offered a lively and personal story of his journey as a store owner. Erik shared both successes and challenging moments while walking the students through the realities of running an ICA store. He covered topics such as staffing, waste management, meeting local customer needs, and the day-to-day entrepreneurial responsibilities of a retailer. His story provided valuable perspective on the practical side of ICA's business model.

Many thanks to Emilie Goldensohn Fuchs and the entire ICA team for organizing such an inspiring and memorable experience for the students!
